Design in small numbers is a phenomenon on the rise. Contemporary art and design are melding together, exchanging roles and justifying each other.

Investments in artwork appear to be astronomical, and the international auction-circuit success for design by the masters is constant, especially for those pieces that are no longer (or have never been) available via the normal furniture sales channels. So why not skip a step and land directly at the feet of collectors?

Plusdesign is at once a gallery and a brand specialising in limited edition furniture and lighting. “Everything we make is the work of individual artists and designers whose one point in common is an urge to experiment” they said.

Why bring artists and designers together?
Because artists, when they want to have a direct physical impact on the world around them, often find themselves engaged in design, as an ideal means of coming into contact with a public of active users whose lifestyles, habits and desires they wish to call into question.

Because designers, when they want to test the intellectual apparatus behind their work, often look to the world of art and of ideal, rather than practical, research.

Fehlbaum, the illuminated entrepreneur and intellectual who founded Vitra Edition in 1987. “When we made the first Vitra Edition 20 years ago,” he affirms, “our motivation was freedom from the strict regulations and conventions of the design industry, and this has remained our propelling force.

After Plusdesign’s first opening
After via Ventura, Plusdesign will open a second headquarters in Berlin,just next to trendy Prenzlauerberg and Mitte.

“At openings in Via Ventura”, Laghi recalls, “I often stopped to observe visitors shifting their fascinated gaze from one work to another, from one artist’s world to another’s, taking in the positive energy emanating from those rooms. I often wondered what their homes were like, with what kind of furniture and objects these people surrounded themselves. Who knows? – perhaps they would like to sit on a sofa or lean on a console designed by an artist they admire or by a particularly courageous designer. So when Mariano Pichler asked me to get involved with Plusdesign, I was enthusiastic about the idea and attracted to the cultural and strategic relevance of this project, and to the atmosphere of curiosity, of competition and yet of solidarity that exists in Zona Ventura.”

More about the owner

Lilia Laghi has extensive experience in design and furniture development. For many years she has run a large showroom with products from the main Italian and international companies. She has deep first-hand knowledge of the market, enriched since 2003 by her own activities as an interior designer.

Mariano Pichler, born in Mezzocorona, architect and devoted collector of contemporary art, has always sought to mix his passion with his work. In 2000 he began work on a major project to redevelop Milan’s Lambrate industrial area, giving life to a new art, design and architecture center for the city. A pilot project that is still growing, Lambrate has served a model for initiatives in other outlying areas of Milan and soon in Berlin as well.
